I've been working with Pivot founder and instructor Leslie McNabb for a few years, and she's honestly changed my life. My goal was not perfect abs or weight loss. Rather, my goal was to get back in my body and to alleviate the back and hip pain resulting from my sedentary lifestyle (I'm a writer) as well as a serious accident; I broke a vertebrae in my lower spine and also my neck. The short story is that Leslie compassionately and capably helped me accomplish these goals, as well as achieve better overall body mechanics. The longer story is that she's pretty much the only person I now trust when I go out of physical alignment--when I experience body pain or get out of shape. For years I had gone to massage therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, you name it. But I had never really solved any of the underlying issues causing my pain. Rather, I had just thrown the therapeutic equivalent of band-aids over them. Since I've met Leslie, all that has changed. Every time I experience a spasm or an ache, she helps me diagnose the underlying cause and patiently works me through a series of exercises that correct the issue while increasing my strength and flexibility. The movements she has guided me through often seem subtle, but they have retrained my brain to realign my body and avoid pain and injury moving forward. The studio is clean, cheerful, and well-equipped and the private sessions with Leslie and the other instructors offer a level of integrity and diligence you really don't find often, no matter how expensive or highly touted the "trainers." Leslie views her clients as whole beings, not just as a series of symptoms. She considers our lifestyle, our emotional well-being, and our physical routine when she assesses how best to help us, and she not only gives us good workouts using various pilates equipment and props but she shows us how to walk, sit, and even carry things more effectively. A session with her entails a discussion of how I'm feeling upon arrival as well as a visual assessment of my alignment--which hip is hiked up higher, which ankle is more turned out. Then, she guides me through a series of stretches and other pilates- and Feldenkrais-inspired gyrotechnics that invariably leave me more energized and adjusted. In the time I've worked with Leslie, I have learned how to practice pilates far more effectively--even taking a generic mat class at a gym is a more rewarding workout now that she's given me a better grasp of the practice. More than that, I have improved my overall health. I hold myself better, walk better, and even choose my footwear with more awareness. Ultimately, the proof is in the pudding. For the first time since I hit my late 30s (I'm in my late 40s now), I no longer live with constant back and hip pain. I am so, so grateful for Leslie and her friendly, efficient staff and studio.
