Kevin is the coach for the volleyball classes and is an incredible teacher. I only joined the gym so I could play beach volleyball and it’s exceeded all of my expectations almost entirely because of Kevin’s coaching. I was brand new to the sport and in the course of 1 1/2 months am feeling greatly improved. You can really tell Kevin both knows exactly what he’s talking about and wants you to get better too! I don’t know how he stays so invested but I’m constantly amazed. Class is hard but also fun and a great workout. I can’t imagine a better experience. My only critique would be that I wish there were additional volleyball classes. Maybe an additional intermediate class please?

Feb 16, 2025 · Zachary GrovesHonestly, I don’t know why I stuck around Chelsea Piers Fitness for as long as I did. The gym’s fine, but the staff? Not so much. At first, you don’t notice it, but they make it clear they don’t want you there. They’ll put a hamper in front of your locker, ask you to pick up some random guy’s dirty towel, or accuse you of things for no reason. It’s all passive-aggressive nonsense that makes the gym feel more like an exclusive club than a place to work out. The real issue, though, is how the staff treats members. They act like they’re above everyone, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for those just trying to have a decent experience. It’s a bad look, especially when you're trying to build a loyal customer base in a diverse city like New York. The maids and receptionists have way too much control over memberships. They can cancel your membership without even talking to you, which is a serious problem when it comes to customer retention. And on top of that, the staff’s behavior is unprofessional. They’ll complain about their jobs, ask for sympathy, and try to guilt people into tipping them. It’s awkward, and honestly, not the type of service any gym should be providing. Another thing that’s completely out of line is how the staff monitors certain members. They’ll watch you pack your bag, and sometimes, they’ll even follow you around the gym, keeping track of where you are. It’s not like this happens to everyone, though—they definitely pick and choose who they stalk. This type of behavior creates a toxic environment and goes against any basic principles of customer service. Chelsea Piers is pushing away potential loyal members, and that's not good for business. New York is full of diverse people, and if the gym wants to succeed, they need to create a welcoming atmosphere for all. If the staff continues treating people this way, they’ll only keep losing customers. They need to make a change—and fast.

During a walk-through with Zack, I was told that my 16-year-old son could use the gym, which made me excited to get him a membership, especially since they offer boxing. However, both times I brought him, they asked for his ID. I explained that all he has is a school ID, which doesn't have his birthday on it because he's 16, but they wouldn't accept it. When I tried to cancel my membership on 1-14-25 6:30pm, I couldn't do it directly. The manager said someone would call me to cancel, but that never happened. Overall, it’s been a big waste of my time and money. The lack of clear communication and poor handling of the cancellation process were very disappointing.
